8 Movie Villains Whose Logic Makes No Sense

7. Vertical Limit - Elliot Returns To The Mountain He Left A Person To Die On

Strap on a can of nitroglycerine and load up on some extra dexamethasone, because for the first time in over twenty years, someone's going to talk about Vertical Limit.

The action survival thriller follows an expedition to save a group of climbers trapped in the heart of K2. If torrential avalanches, jagged cliff edges and unpredictable cans of explosives weren't tense enough threats for the heroes on screen, the film throws in some interpersonal drama as Elliot Vaughn (Bill Paxton) starts picking off his fellow survivors.

It is established earlier on in the film that Vaughn had tried to climb K2 before, but tragedy struck and his guide was killed in a storm. The guide's husband is the amazingly named Montgomery Wick (Scott Glenn), who has always been sceptical of the story and believes something more sinister was afoot.

Midway through the film, Wick discovers the body of his wife and confirms the medicine that could have saved her was stolen - obviously by Vaughn. Couple this scene with the sequence where Vaughn murders his injured climbing buddy, and it's obvious Vaughn is just as cold as the ice around him.

Now I've never climbed K2, but I do imagine it's a rather big place. However, even if there was 100% guarantee that any of the bodies I've left up there would never be discovered, I'd still not go back. In fact, I'd do as much as I could to not draw attention to myself and the mountain in case someone did connect any dots.

But like the dunce that he is, Vaughn routinely returns to K2 to climb - always with Wick questioning that fateful climb. Vaughn, you're a multimillionaire! You could climb any other mountain in the world! But you insist on returning to the scene of your crime!

I overthink a lot of things. Will talk about pretty much anything for a great length of time. I'm obsessed with General Slocum from the 2002 Spider-Man film. I have questions that were never answered in that entire trilogy!
