8 Movies Loved By Their Viewers But Hated By Their Critics
1. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters
Tomatometer - 43% : Audience Score - 83%
It's very understandable why critics called Godzilla: King Of The Monsters a letdown. The first film was a divisive piece of cinema that misused big actors, and rarely showed the giant lizard. Its sequel's trailer promised something different (and it did deliver) but also the first trailer promised a wondrous piece of cinema.
Sadly, it didn't deliver.
Critics (rightly) denounced the film for its noisy, loud, headache-inducing CGI spectacles and its inconsistent human characters. The dialogue was so expository, that it at times sounded like an alien language, and the passionless approach to showing the size of the monsters didn't amaze as much as we had expected.
Then again! Audiences adored the film, probably because of its core values: Those who bought a ticket to go into the theatres to see a three-headed dragon fight a giant lizard and they got what they paid for. Fans of the original Japanese franchise and the universe surrounding other monsters felt the film honoured and presented the mythology brilliantly, and were genuinely excited for what came next.
Godzilla: KOTM's splitting of audiences' and critics prove that sometimes giving the people what they want isn't what critics like to see.
