4. World War Z's Russia-Set Third Act Was Completely Abandoned
The Trailer: Even just a few weeks before World War Z's release, a new trailer featured a seemingly harmless but ultimately crucial line of dialogue, as protagonist Gerry (Brad Pitt) asks, "If I could get into Russia, where would I start?", to which a man replies, "Russia's a black hole." It seems to suggest that the movie's probably going to end up in Russia, possibly for its finale, right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPGUtytMUk8&feature=youtu.be The Final Movie: World War Z suffered a troubled production schedule, and a large portion of the movie's third act ended up being re-shot. Originally, the movie climaxed in Russia, with Gerry becoming a ruthless zombie killer before discovering that his wife, in order to protect herself and their kids, has begun sleeping with a paratrooper, played by Matthew Fox. Fox does appear briefly in the final cut, but all of the Russia footage was erased in favour of a finale set at the World Health Organisation in Wales, as Paramount apparently felt that the darker original ending made Gerry too difficult to sympathise with. As for that original Russia dialogue? It was changed to "India", but rather than re-shoot the scene, the word "India" was just dubbed over, and it's very, very noticeable.
