8 Movies That Changed Hugely From The Trailers

3. Iron Man 3 Bait & Switches The Mandarin

The Trailer: In addition to promising a much darker Marvel movie than audiences were accustomed to, the trailers for Iron Man 3 touted Tony Stark's most fierce foe yet in The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), showing off several scenes of wanton destruction apparently perpetrated by the iconic villain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYSD2VQagc4 The Final Movie: As it turns out, of course, the movie's footage was heavily manipulated to make Kingsley's character seem like a straight-forward baddie, when in actual fact, he's an actor named Trevor Slattery who is simply employed to pretend to be the Mandarin, while the "real" Mandarin, Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), can operate undetected. An awesome comic book villain was turned into a joke, and naturally, many fans felt that the trailers had presented them a wildly different film to the finished product. Granted, it doesn't really feature much in the way of footage missing from the film, but Marvel employed sneaky editing so that they could pull the rug out from audiences, and not everyone, fanboy or no, was pleased about this. Plus, that dark tone the trailers promised? Nowhere to be seen: this is gag-based Marvel as you know it.
