8 Movies That Changed Hugely From The Trailers

2. Superman Returns Cut A $10 Million Krypton Sequence

The Trailer: The first teaser trailer for 2006's Superman Returns, aside from suggesting that the film would be another take on the Man of Steel's origin story, featured one particularly provocative image (at the 0:43 mark), of an unidentified spaceship floating through the ruins of an unknown planet. For Superman fans, it didn't take too much deduction to assume that this land mass might be Krypton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CuJ08nwJpA The Final Movie: This scene is nowhere to be found in the end product, and it later transpired that director Bryan Singer in fact deleted a huge, 6-minute, $10 million opening sequence called "Return to Krypton", in which Superman visits the ruins of Krypton looking for answers. It's a fascinating scene though probably doesn't have enough dramatic momentum for more mainstream audiences, who needed to be re-acquainted with the Man of Steel a little faster than this. As such, between that trailer and the final film, Singer had to substantially alter his approach to the film, moving away from moody thoughtfulness and playing up the more kitschy, old-school elements.
