8 Movies That Were Wiped Out Of Continuity By Their Sequels
7. Highlander III: The Sorcerer Completely Ignores Highlander II: The Quickening
This entry could apply to all the Highlander sequels, as the franchise has one of the most tangled timelines in cinema. The first Highlander had a conclusive ending, with Connor MacLeod defeating the last immortal and winning The Prize. But money dictated a sequel had to happen somehow. The solution the filmmakers came up with was to retcon the immortals origin and turn them into exiled aliens from the Planet Zeist. This unspeakably shoddy idea, alongside the general shoddiness of Highlander II: The Quickening, outraged fans so much that the eventual Highlander III just outright ignores it. The third movie is technically set before The Quickening, but it contradicts it so much it makes the events of that movie almost impossible. There is no mention of Zeist, Connors late wife is said to have died in a completely different way and he now has an adopted son, who is never mentioned in Part Two. Theres also no mention of Connor being a scientist helping to build a shield to protect the planet from a hole in the ozone layer, which was the central thrust of The Quickening. The Sorcerer at least managed to be a bit better than The Quickening, but its ultimately a lukewarm retread of the original.
