3. Buried
This little seen film holds a distinct honor of being a Ryan Reynolds movie that doesn't suck. Reynolds plays Paul Conroy, an American truck driver in Iraq that is attacked and buried in a coffin. Given nothing but a lighter and a cell phone, Paul tries desperately to save himself. To be upfront, Buried does not end well. In fact, it's kind of a jerk with it's ending. Director Rodrigo Cortes convinces us that all hope is lost and Paul will certainly die. then suddenly, our hopes are risen when the US agent Paul has been in contact with calls back and tells him that rescue is just above his head! Only it's not, as the agent received false information, and so Paul dies anyway. Bummer. Believe it or not, that's not the most depressing, aggravating part of Buried. Near the middle of the film, Paul takes solace in the fact that his wife will be taken care of thanks to his insurance plan that is set up through his company. But then he gets a call from his company, who have heard about his situation and rather than try to help him, do the most heartless thing imaginable. They falsely accuse him of having an affair with a co-worker, and fire him as he's in the coffin. This means that his insurance plan would be void, and his wife would get nothing. So not only does Paul die, but now Paul's wife is going to think he cheated on her and she'll have no money to live on.
