8 Plot Discrepancies In The X-Men Films

7. Who Created Cerebro?

cerebro Early on the first X-Men film, viewers are introduced to Cerebro, a machine that allows Professor X to use his powers and connect with the mind of every mutant and human on Earth. During the film, the professor claims to have built the device with his friend-turned-enemy Magneto, who is able to use his knowledge of the machine€™s workings to shield himself from it using a specialist helmet. This explanation is more than sufficient, though X-Men: First Class made the decision to reverse it, attributing the creation of the machine to Hank McCoy (Beast), who is introduced as a mutant working within the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The professor therefore has no involvement in its development, creating an error in continuity, though he does use it to locate and recruit a host of mutants to oppose the film€™s vlllain, Sebastian Shaw. Shaw€™s minions do destroy the device in an attack on the CIA facility where it is located, however, meaning that Xavier could be stated to have been referring only to the rebuilt version as €˜his€™ creation. In another minor discrepancy, the helmet Magneto uses throughout the original film trilogy to shield himself from Xavier€™s powers isn€™t his creation (as it is stated to be on numerous occasions) at all. Instead he merely takes possession of it from Shaw during the events of the prequel.
