8 Popular Fan Theories That Completely Ignore The Movie They're About
2. R2-D2 And Chewie Being Rebel Spies Ignores Everything Else In The Movies
Before Star Wars: The Force Awakens threw out so many unanswered questions that the theory brigade is going to be in business all the way through to December 2017, this was the Star Wars theory. In the original movie R2-D2 wasn't just looking for Obi-Wan and Chewbacca wasn't just chilling with Han; both were Rebel spies keeping tabs on Luke Skywalker and attempting to shape wider galactic events.
To be honest, it took me an awful long time to even get what exactly was so enticing about all this. R2-D2 is explicitly on a secret Rebel mission anyway, and suggesting that the two main characters who don't speak English have more to them seemed to be incredibly desperate reaching. It's a theory that gets so caught up in finding hidden meanings that it forgets what's on the surface; you can read the films this way, but have to then contrive an alternate explanation for every single scene that those characters feature in.
The only positive it really offer anyway is that it explains why R2 and Chewie don't blab about all the prequels events straight up, although - again from watching the movies - neither is actually privy to anything major; Chewbacca's on the fringe of the Clone Wars and while R2 will know who Anakin was and that he wasn't too nice by the end, there's nothing to ever suggest he knew he'd taken on the Darth Vader title.
