8 Possible Futures For The Spider-Man Movie Franchise

8. The Current Plan

Before entering exciting possibilities, it's worth considering that through all this indecision Sony could still continue has they have been. Much of the speculation is motivated by the disappointing domestic box office taking from the Amazing reboot, but on a worldwide stage it's doing well. Not as good as Captain America (which is very embarrassing), but enough to make it profitable. With this in mind, there doesn't seem to be much financially wrong with continuing with this inconsistent universe that has two movies of set up. Quite what the planned future of Spidey is at this point changes as often as the focus of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Following the first film, the plan was a simple run of movies; second in 2014, third in 2016, fourth in 2018 (which is where Garfield's four-movie contract comes from). But that was before The Avengers, after which every studio felt the obligation to make every property into a shared universe. So now we're expecting supervillan team-up The Sinister Six, which The Amazing Spider-Man 2 served as a trailer for. We learned at Comic-Con that it is going to displace The Amazing Spider-Man 3's 2016 release, with the threequel pushed back to 2018 and an unnamed female-led set for 2017 (surely Black Cat). As for Venom, which has also been announced, with writer Alex Kurtzman attached as director, there seems a distinct lack of progress, suggesting this is pretty much cancelled. That leaves us with a film a year from 2016 onwards, but of course, there's the much discussed possibility of other things happening alongside this.
