8 Possible Futures For The Spider-Man Movie Franchise

6. The MCU Has A Brand New Spider-Man

For our money, this would be the way to put Spider-Man in The Avengers and allow Kevin Feige and Joss Whedon to actually be creative with it (rather than having to work in another series of films); Marvel loan the character in general, not the Amazing take. This is essentially the same legal idea as the previous point, but with Garfield absent from proceedings; a situation that would arise if Sony were keen to rent out the hero, but the actor didn't want to sign on for it (his contract isn't with Marvel and Sony may want to keep him for their films). That would obviously be less attractive to Sony, who wouldn't have their Amazing brand strengthened by association, but would still help them out a little financially and hopefully restore audience faith in Spidey. The problem with this idea is that it's all a little too ideal. It's essentially buying a loop-hole in the contract to allow Sony to continue messing with the character while Marvel get to use one of their most iconic heroes at long last, which would probably require so much negotiation that it would ultimately not amount to anything. There's been some suggestion that the whole thing would work the other way round, with Marvel giving The Avengers to Sony for a movie, but that seems an odd proposition; Marvel doesn't need the help. Ultimately, the whole Sony loaning Spider-Man is an exciting idea, but it's only a peripheral idea to whatever they do with the franchise on their own, which we'll be looking at next.
