8 Problems With John Wick No-One Wants To Admit
5. The Villains Are Awful
In terms of villains, the John Wick films are incredibly underwhelming.
The exception is the first film's Iosef Tarasov, who was a good side-villain but to be honest that was more thanks to the still-underrated Alfie Allen's stellar performance than anything else.
Throughout the trilogy the pattern is the same: a caricature foreign guy is the main antagonist. In the first film, it's a stereotypical Russian gangster. In the second film, it's a stereotypical Spanish gangster. In the third film, it's a stereotypical bald Asian martial artist.
All three of these villains are uninteresting characters, especially Chapter 3's Zero, who's definitely the worst of the bunch. In fairness, Michael Nyqvist and Riccardo Scamarcio did OK work as Viggo Tarasov and Santino D'Antonio in the first and second films respectively but Mark Dacascos gave a very wooden performance as Zero. Chapter 3 also boasted the Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon), a member of the High Table (the body governing the entire organisation of assassins), who was also a dull villain played poorly by Dillon.
The side henchmen are never interesting either and are always killed by Wick before they can make an impact anyhow.
