8 Reasons Batman V Superman Is The Most Culturally Significant Movie Of 2016

2. We All Know What Batman And Superman’s Mums Are Called

Before seeing Batman V Superman, I'd never considered that both heroes mothers had the same first name. Dawn Of Justice took David Goyer/Zack Snyder's realisation of this and turned it into the year's most accidentally laughable moment (try and defend it all you like, it's pure ridiculousness). And yet it's also one of the most iconic.

That's the thing: this may seem like a joke entry, but it's actually one of the most important points. It's a key emblem of how the film's suckiness goes from poor moviemaking to inexplicably dumb decisions and drives so much of the conversation. In the space of two minutes, Snyder made a scene as instantly memorable as anything Christopher Nolan did, and while it's for vastly different reasons, that's a perverse achievement.

On a less cynical level, it's also representative of how Batman V Superman (and major comic book movies in general) took ancillary characters - Martha, Martha, Mercy Graves, Darkseid and his parademons - and make them essential in their own way. Terrible scene, but that doesn't make it any less impactful.
