8 Reasons Deadpool Lives Up To The Hype (And 6 It Doesn't)

2. It Doesn't Work When It Tries To Be Serious

Though the film largely has a firm handle on its tone, it does occasionally stumble rather clumsily when approaching seriousness. This is primarily during the flashback sequences where Wade and Vanessa come to terms with Wade's cancer diagnosis. The jokes take a backseat and these scenes often feel like they belong in a different movie, namely a Lifetime one, considering that nobody really seems to fire them through with much interest or conviction. Much like the audience, it just seems like everyone wants to get back to the quick-fire gags and ultra-violence, so why, then, even both in the first place? The same goes for the fairly earnest romantic elements later on in the movie: it doesn't mesh well with the savage tone that comprises about 80% of the film, and could be cut with few complaints.
