3. Another Marc Webb?
Looking back on The Amazing Spider-Man movies, despite their many faults, Marc Webb no doubt did a tremendous job of bringing the character of Spider-Man to life on the big screen. What he struggled with doing was telling a cohesive story, and while much of that can be blamed on studio interference, so too can his lack of experience in the realm of big budget filmmaking. While Marvel are well-known for making unexpected choices of director for their movies (don't pretend you weren't horrified at the thought of the guys behind You, Me, And Dupree directing Captain America: The Winter Soldier when that was first announced), you'd think that they would have played it safe with this Spider-Man reboot by going for a more experienced filmmaker with a proven track record. Instead, they went for Jon Watts, a director who has helmed only a single fairly well-received indie movie in the form of Cop Car. Watts has been saying all the right things when it comes to his inspiration for the reboot, but whether or not he's going to be able to pull it off is another matter. After the tepid response to The Amazing Spider-Man and the negative reaction to its sequel, the fate of Spider-Man's future on the big screen very much hinges on this 2017 release, and if Watts drops the ball, then that could be the end for the wall-crawler's solo adventures.
