8 Reasons Mission Impossible Is Better Than James Bond

4. Mission Impossible Better Understands Superspy Movie Tone

It took Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird to really crack open what a superspy movie should feel like. It€™s no coincidence that his previous credits were The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille. The brilliance of his vision for Mission:Impossible was that he allowed the cartoonish aspects of the concept to bloom. His film features the blowing up of the actual Kremlin, contact lenses as a gadget, and a climactic struggle set in a bonkers parking garage out of a platform video game. Rogue Nation writer/director Christopher McQuarrie also ran with this tone, including a mission brief delivered by a vinyl record, a recently drowned Ethan Hunt operating a motor vehicle, and a highly implausible mask-centric scheme. In short, these are fun movies. There is abundant silliness and joy, which the Craig Bond films for the most part haven€™t allowed.
