8 Reasons Why X-Men: Apocalypse Might Suck

5. It€™s All A Bit€ Gloomy

Yes, okay, it is a movie called X-Men: Apocalypse., so it's bound to be grim, but why set it in the 80s, a decade known for its ostentatiousness? If anything, a movie with Apocalypse as the villain would have been far better suited to the 70s, notably a time when the US was extremely down-at-heel and feeling pretty sorry for itself. More than that, the 80s are an absolutely fantastic excuse for Singer to finally give our favourite mutants the colourful costumes so well-liked in the comics, and he obviously just hasn€™t (judging from what we can see of that familiar-looking black battle-gear in the trailer). It€™s the 80s! A ridiculous time period! Lighten up, guys. You could have gotten away with fairly brazen costuming choices because people would have forgiven it, for the period setting. Going back to the admitted point that it is a movie called Apocalypse, the filmmakers could arguably do with something to lighten the tone so that it€™s not 100% dark and depressing. Audiences need to have a little humour to balance out the plot so that they don€™t feel like they€™re watching Requiem for a Dream with mutants.
