When any film bombs at the box office it is widely assumed that any hopes of a sequel bomb along with it.

However, recent evidence suggests that this is not the case as many box office bombs have gone on to receive sequels, from cult classics like Blade Runner to the modern robotic gladiatorial battles of Pacific Rim box office bombs franchise aren't automatically dumped in the trash heap.

A film can be considered a box office bomb when it fails to gross a minimum of 2x its reported budget, although with bulging marketing costs this requirement can be as high as 2.5x the budget. This collection of films failed to meet one or both of these requirements, but the filmmakers and fans can still hold strong hopes for a sequel.

8. Blade Runner 2049

Warner Bros.

Budget: $150 million

Box Office: $259,239,658

A sequel in of itself to a critically acclaimed flop Blade Runner 2049 was a harsh disappointment despite rave reviews and fans of this science fiction sequel will be hoping lightning can strike twice, and a sequel green lit despite poor box office receipts.

Blade Runner 2049 and the original film both had the same issue in that many audience members liked the films there just wasn't enough of them to warrant the high budgets needed for sci-fi spectaculars, especially in the case of 2049.

Hope for a new Blade Runner is not unwarranted as producer Ridley Scott, leading star Harrison Ford, director Dennis Villeneuve and writer Hampton Fancher have all expressed interest in returning to Blade Runner's world. Even after the sequel's performance, Scott said in 2018 he had a story ready to go.

Perhaps third time could be a charm at the box office for this franchise?
