8 Ridiculous Coincidences That Made For Happy Movie Endings

5. The Day Is Saved... Thanks To A Tribble - Star Trek Into Darkness

When Star Trek delved into black-holes and alternate realities, J.J Abrams was given a clean slate with which he could mould the established canon as he saw fit. He had a host of characters and story arcs to borrow from - or in this case, copy entirely. A lot has been said about Star Trek Into Darkness being a blatant rip-off of Wrath of Khan, which is essentially true, but it worked nonetheless - thanks to a shattering performance from Benedict Cumberbatch, and the Spock/Kirk role reversal. However, this is also where the plot veers off-course. When Kirk dies inside the core saving the Enterprise, we expect him to stay dead (at least until the sequel). The crew are in disarray. Spock sets his sights on Khan, while the others mourn their fallen captain... until a tribble - yes, a tribble - squirms under the power of the antagonist's super-blood and saves the day; before Kirk even had a chance to go cold. Bones' miracle cure works, at the final hour, and Jim is saved. With typical Hollywood timing, our protagonist is plucked from the clutches of death by very coincidental plot development.

I love all things imaginative, from the page to the screen, and nurture a soft spot for Donald Sutherland and Daniel Bryan.
