5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
There was a communal sigh of relief when it was announced the new reboot of the Planet of the Apes would take a brave step and follow the ape uprising (in a sense remaking the fourth film of the original series, Conquest for the Planet of the Apes). With make-up traded in for state-of-the-art motion capture and a succinct title, Rise of the Apes looked like the it had its sights firmly set on the future (and away from Tim Burtons embarrassing attempt). But once the film was in the can, the title doubled in length to the mouthful of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. It may be in keeping with the other films and makes it clear this film is part of the series, not ripping it off, but when the film itself is trying set up its own canon, reminding us what came before isnt a great move. Its a bit like rebooting a film, but spending the entire running time referencing to the original.
Wait, what?
