8 Scariest Twist Movie Endings That Will Keep You Up At Night

3. The Cabin In The Woods

The Mist Ending
Lionsgate

Infamous for its dual-wielding of genre tropes and clever commentary, The Cabin in the Woods is Drew Goddard's horror effort that sees five teenagers head out to the titular cabin for a weekend away, only to face off against a redneck zombie torture family who want nothing more than to kill them off slowly and surely.

As the film goes on, the role of a concerned government company becomes clear, and that they must ensure human sacrifices in the form of horror stereotypes are offered up to the old gods to stop them destroying our world. In a mind-melting display of just about every horror movie monster you could ever imagine, the teenagers refuse their part in the ritual - condemning both the facility and the world to the unleashed creatures as well as the angry gods down below.

The Cabin in the Woods's ending is fantastic not only for having a metric f*ckload of beloved creatures make a cameo for fans of the genre, but for the overarching meta notion that any horror film we watch outside of the movie is a part of this government plan to keep the population at large from being wiped out.

Everything from A Nightmare on Elm Street to Ringu has been engineered with a purpose in mind, and despite their terrifying contents, there's something much more frightening they're keeping at bay.
