I'm sorry. Were you planning on living forever?

Futurists have had immortality mapped out for a while all thanks to Moore’s Law, which effectively states the complexity of the computer doubles every two years. That law was established by Gordon Moore back in 1965 and many cling onto it as evidence we will achieve computing powers that will exceed the human brain (i.e. the technology singularity) by sometime in the mid-2040s. However, roughly nine years ago, Mr. Moore himself stated the law will expire by the early to mid-2020s.

So, why is this important?

Well, in order to upload a human mind, we need to trust the computer we’re plugging into can first support the human mind, something we ourselves don’t fully understand. A computer can calculate faster than the brain, and it will only get faster as time progresses, but a computer cannot do what our brain does. Not without programming.

Imagine seeing person’s face across a crowded room. Without breaking so much as a proverbial sweat or perceived devotion to thought, we draw several simultaneous conclusions: how we know them; where we last saw them; why they’re present, now - hell, we can tell what they’re feeling based on their expression, and we even know, based on experience, whether or not it’s a good idea to approach them, all while we calculate the distance to the nearest exit.

If a computer cannot recreate the essence of what it is to be human, humans shouldn’t try uploading their minds to one. Additionally, philosophically speaking, many argue whether or not the mind would really be moved or just copied. Which brings us on to...
