8 Shocking Horror Movie Monsters With Surprising Powers

These monsters were weird enough without these shocking powers. Case 39, Sputnik & more!

Generally when looking at a horror movie monster you sort of know what to expect. In terms of powers, abilities, motivations and such there is usually a similar formula applied to every example of a certain creature.

Werewolves are always gonna turn big and furry and have heightened senses, vampires are always going to suck blood and be able to control your mind, demons are always going to possess people, so on and so forth.

In a world of unsureness it’s nice to have some certainties, but it’s also boring. And we deserve better than boring. We deserve demons than do wild things like melting people’s eyeballs to drink like soup, werewolves that have pyrokinetic abilities to cook their food first, vampires that can transport along electricity lines to anywhere in the world in an instant, or something equally random like that! (None of these monsters, to my knowledge, exist so feel free to pick them up, filmmakers.)

The possibilities are endless when crafting a monster from your imagination, we already see this exemplified in so many films. So come on horror, let’s get weird….

8. Sputnik - The Parasitic Alien

The real beauty of the alien in Sputnik is its careful operation, it's cleverly-executed chaos that leaves its host completely unaware of its presence in their body.

Returning to Earth after a space expedition, cosmonaut Konstantin is carrying within him an alien being. As he sleeps, the beast emerges and feeds on humans - which admittedly isn’t great - but Konstantin is none the wiser.

Not only does the alien have the power to hide seamlessly within a human host, making itself a very unintrusive guest (if you don’t count all the people-eating), it is smart enough to make itself useful. It is able to rapidly heal its host, and eventually make their body dependent on it.

Konstantin was injured in his crash-landing back to home terrain but with the assistance of his outer-space body-buddy, he’s back on fighting form quicker than ever humanly possible. So not only is the alien shocking in its cool hide-and-seek approach to earth invasion, you have to be a little impressed by its forethought too.
