6. Skynet Wins - Terminator Salvation
The internet worked into a froth in 2008 when the planned ending for Terminator Salvation leaked online. It revealed John Connor was supposed to die, and have his face transplanted onto new character Marcus, a human/Terminator hybrid. This was meant to be the origin of Connor’s iconic facial scar, and provide the ultimate irony of the series; the saviour of mankind is secretly a Terminator himself.
Surprisingly, the original ending went even further. After the face transplant, the resistance gathers around Marcus to examine him when his eyes suddenly glow red. He grabs a weapon and slaughters everyone in the room, including Kyle Reese, Connor’s pregnant wife Kate and even the adorable mute girl.
It’s not known how this jet black ending would have led to another movie – given that Skynet just wiped out the resistance and all – but it’s certainly an intriguing direction. Salvation still features the build-up to this climax, but it chickens out and features the risible heart transplant scene instead.
