8 Sneaky Ways A Movie Got Greenlit

1. Fifty Shades Of Grey Was Based On Erotic Twilight Fan Fiction

It would be fair to say that fan fiction is not held in high esteem critically; while a few brave fan authors manage to expand upon their favourite works in interesting ways, most of them are just poorly written nonsense. Erotic fan fiction in particular is often reviled for taking beloved characters, and making them do things nobody should want to see them doing. That's what happened with vampire love story Twilight, where an author called Snowqueens Icedragon made Bella and Edward do stuff that would - and probably did - make Stephenie Meyer blush. It was so popular that Snowqueens (aka E.L. James) rewrote it and turned it into a trilogy of "erotic" books titled Fifty Shades Of Grey. And you sadly know where this goes. Hollywood eventually came calling to turn it into a spicy franchise, where James was given free rein to preserve her terrible prose just the way she wanted it. Whatever people think of Fifty Shades Of Grey, they have to admit that it made an impressive journey from being bad written fan fic into a badly written major motion picture. Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
