8 Star Wars Questions That Always Confused You

4. How Would A Jedi Choose What Lightsaber They Wielded?

A Jedi's weapon is extremely sacred. As relayed via The Clone Wars, we know that all Jedi Younglings would take a ceremonial trip to Ilum where they would find their kyber crystal and construct their own lightsaber. But how does a Jedi decide what kind of lightsaber they want to wield, and how do they go about getting another crystal if the process is so sacred?

We actually got some of the answers to this question in the Ahsoka novel by E. K. Johnston. It goes into a little more detail about how a Jedi would connect to a kyber crystal, how it would be invisible to anyone but them when arriving on Ilum, and then they would retrieve it, but they could also connect to a crystal already in use, which is how Ahsoka attains her white lightsabers before Star Wars Rebels.

This is all fine and dandy for those Jedi who were seeking replacement lightsabers, but it doesn't explain exactly how or why one would decide to own two lightsabers, or even wield a double-bladed weapon. So, what's the deal?

The current canon is yet to lay out the specifics of how a Jedi would develop their own style of combat, keeping discussion focused instead on the different forms and some of the styles they adopted, and how a master could have an influence on their apprentice to pursue a particular one, but nothing so specific that would lay out the exact process of how a Jedi would switch from one blade to two, for instance.

The High Republic has provided some clarification on this issue, with Charles Soule's Light of the Jedi revealing that the Knights of the era often changed up their weapons based on how their fighting style developed, or even if they wanted something a little more stylish, but it's still unclear how the practice evolved by the time of the Prequels.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
