What It Could Win: Best Costume Design Cinderella was a surprisingly sweet tale with Lily James and Cate Blanchetts performance being a real hit amongst the critics, but the costume design is where the films strength lies. The iconic dress and glass shoes was what Disney fans and audiences were waiting for and costume designer Sandy Powell didnt disappoint, finding the right mix of colourful pantomime and period drama realism. Powell previously won the Oscar for her work on Shakespeare in Love, The Aviator and The Young Victoria, and unlike with the previous films mentioned, it seems very likely shes going to need to make room for a fourth on the mantelpiece. Dark Horse Nominations: Best Production Design While Disneys previous classic animation to live action adventures Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland relied heavily on special effects, Cinderella managed to keep itself fairly grounded without losing its fairy tale roots. Visually, the films production is beautiful and Dante Ferrettis work should be commended for bringing such a vivid, colourful real world to life with just the right touch of magic his work on the palace (especially during the ball which feels like it was taken straight out of the animation) standing out as the films finest.
