3. Villains Who Are Basically The Exact Same As The Hero But With Differently Coloured Armour
As seen in: Ant-Man, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man 3, Man Of Steel Its slightly more irritating than the Were not so different, you and I trope because it invites even less discussion of contrasting motivations: its just that ones good and ones bad, and thats about it. It just means that big battles end up being a seemingly never-ending cavalcade of near-meaningless punches and grunting without much in the way of a shifting dynamic or narratively engaging story. If I wanted to watch a load of CGI lumps that I didn't care about at all batter each other to pieces in an endless cavalcade of meaningless spectacle, I'd watch the Transformers saga. Then, after that, I'd have a big think about where everything had gone wrong for me. Thats part of the reason why X-Men and X-Men 2 work so well, and Watchmen to a lesser extent; its not just about punching a dude to death with your big metal fists, its about attempting to win an intellectual battle over who has the moral right and duty to exercise their powers.
