6. Air Force One (1997)

This one has always struck me as a bit much;
Air Force One is, indeed, a film about the titular aircraft being hijacked by terrorists - led by Gary Oldman - on which the President of the United States (Harrison Ford) is of course a passenger, and decides to fight back against his captors. It's a thrilling film, though not exactly one governed by R-rated material; language is limited to a single use of the F-word, and a few lesser swears that would be considered largely inoffensive even at the time, let alone now. There is also no sex or nudity whatsoever, so what it really comes down to is the violence which, in my opinion, is extremely moderate for a film given this rating. Though there is a small amount of infliction of injury shown, the violence is not particularly outlandish or lingering, and frankly, I felt like there was more grim violence in something like
Jurassic Park, which of course only gained a PG-13 despite savage sights including Samuel L. Jackson's severed arm landing on Laura Dern's shoulder. The tone - of an old-school action adventure - really accentuates the feel that this shouldn't be an R.
