8 Things Nobody Wants To Admit About MCU Spider-Man

8. Peter's Personality And Story Were Taken Straight From Miles Morales

Okay so, you know that "youthful energy" I mentioned in the introduction? That's not really Peter Parker.

Although he was far from a stick in the mud in the comics, Pete was very much a wallflower in the original Stan Lee-Steve Ditko run, later developing a more outgoing personality when he became a part of the friendship group that comprised Harry Osborn, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy and Flash Thompson. He might be a bit of a meme these days, but Tobey Maguire has still done the best job of capturing Peter's shy awkwardness in live action.

Which brings me to the MCU's Peter Parker. It's impossible to tell what was going through Marvel and Sony's heads when they were drawing up plans to reboot Spider-Man, but it's more than obvious that Miles Morales must've crossed their minds. How so? Because the new Peter Parker has literally taken SO MUCH from Miles, including his more excitable personality, his relationship with the Avengers (Nick Fury - NOT Tony Stark - gives him his iconic black and red costume in the comics), and even his best friend Ganke, who was changed to become Ned Leeds in the films for... some reason or another.

After two separate film franchises had Peter in the role of Spider-Man, one has to ask why Marvel and Sony didn't just make the MCU's Spidey Miles in the first place. As it stands, this new Peter has taken so much from his comics and it's pretty blatant to see if you've ever read them.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
