8 Times Superhero Movies Pushed The Boundaries Of PG-13

3. Loki Calls Black Widow A Very Nasty Name - The Avengers

Joss Whedon's first Avengers movie is basically an old-school superhero adventure that plays it pretty safe... for the most part.

There are a couple of controversial moments: one is the relatively violent death of Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) on the end of Loki's sceptre (though this was toned down for the home release), and the other is the culmination of the excellent interrogation scene between Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the aforementioned God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston).

Here we see Loki attempt to rattle and terrify Agent Romanov by first threatening to torture and kill her, and then topping it off my calling her a "mewling quim." For those that aren't aware, quim is a Victorian-era slang word for vagina, so in modern English Loki was basically calling Widow a whining... well, starts with C, rhymes with grunt.

Accusations of sexism were levelled at Whedon, but they're completely unfounded as the scene ends with Widow turning the tables on Loki, revealing that she's been playing him for information the whole time. The director has joked that his greatest achievement was working the phrase into a PG-13 film however, and it's hard to disagree!
