8 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Steal IT's Box-Office Crown

5. Slender Man

Slender Man began life as a creepypasta meme on a forum in 2009, and quickly went viral. Soon after, a movie adaptation moved into active development, and the result, Slender Man, will be released on 18 May 2018.

With every month that passes it gets more and more important that a movie is able to make some sort of impact online - whether that's trending on Twitter, inspiring memes, or racking up a record number of trailer views, a feat that It: Chapter One just so happened to accomplish.

This is the quickest way to reach the biggest possible audience, and considering that Slender Man was literally birthed by the internet, it's basically a given that it will generate a ridiculous amount of interest once the first poster or trailer drops, and the popularity of the main character will certainly help the film out when it's eventually released.

Of course, if the film is garbage then the buzz will fizzle out pretty quickly, but if it's good, and scary, then the huge amount of people who will see it opening weekend - i.e. the millions of web users who are familiar with the concept - will be able to kick off the positive word of mouth, giving Slender Man a long, slender pair of box-office legs.

As an added bonus, there isn't another major horror movie currently set for release in April, or May, or even June 2018. Slender Man has the entire period on lockdown. Kaching!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
