8 Upcoming Horror Movies That Could Steal IT's Box-Office Crown
1. Five Nights At Freddy's
The rapid rise to internet stardom enjoyed by survival-horror videogame series Five Nights At Freddy's was remarkable, and came out of nowhere, just like one of the many jump scares the games tout.
Considering their popularity, it wasn't really a surprise when a movie adaptation was shunted into development, and it's currently in the works over at Blumhouse, with no further details having yet been revealed.
Videogame adaptations don't exactly have the best track record, but part of the reason for that is that most of them tried to blindly adapt the game, rather than just make a good movie using the game as an influence.
Over the years, Five Nights At Freddy's has transcended the medium it was born on. There are countless fan theories, fan stories, there's a comprehensive lore, and an entire wiki dedicated to discussing the mystery surrounding Freddy Fazbear and his fellow animatronics. There isn't really a game - or any notable gameplay - to adapt; instead, there are dozens and dozens of story threads the movie could pull on.
This means the filmmakers can focus on crafting a great scary movie using the basic conceit of walking animatronic mascots, without attempting to forcefully translate gameplay elements, locations, or characters, or anything else that might limit creativity.
This will hopefully make Five Nights At Freddy's one of the better videogame movies, but this aside, its built-in fanbase (the very first game still receives hundreds of daily installs) could make the movie as much of a phenomenon as the games turned out to be.
And that means it will earn a lot of money.
