8 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are Doomed To Fail

5. The Bourne Legacy 2

When it comes to ranking the Bourne movies, The Bourne Legacy is definitely on the lower end of the scale, often in dead last.

Jeremy Renner just isn't a convincing action star - something that was reflected in the steep box-office decline the series took when he became the lead - which makes the mere discussion of a sequel to The Bourne Legacy seem bizarre.

Not that The Bourne Legacy 2 is happening anytime soon, if at all - Justin Lin is attached to direct but the project hasn't seen a major development in a while. But it seems wholly unnecessary regardless, with the series running out of steam after 2016's Jason Bourne and completely exhausting the "master assassin delves into his mysterious past while on the run from the authorities" concept.

There's just nowhere else for the Bourne universe to go. Aaron Cross (Renner) is also a master assassin who's on the run from the authorities, a premise which has been mined for all its worth.

If Legacy had been a phenomenal smash hit and people wanted more Renner, a follow-up would sound more promising. But the movie felt like Bourne-lite, and a sequel without Damon is always going to be at a disadvantage.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
