8 Upcoming Movie Sequels That Are Doomed To Fail

4. The Expendables 4

The Expendables 4 is reportedly set to begin filming this summer, surprising everyone who assumed that this franchise was dead in the water after the critical and commercial failure of The Expendables 3.

And that's one reason why a fourth movie is a bad idea - the third performed extremely poorly. Even with a cast of mega-stars, The Expendables 3 only just crawled past $200 million worldwide, indicating that the masses have lost interest in old action stars attempting to recapture that '80s spark.

Audiences now prefer a different, more contemporary style of action movie. In the four years since The Expendables 3, The John Wicks and Fury Roads of the world have made the franchise look like a cheesy, outdated relic, a perception that will prove impossible to overcome.

This type of movie just isn't "cool" anymore. It felt novel to see all these action stars team up for the first movie, but that shine wore off with each sequel. Now, it's just unimpressive, and feels about thirty years too late.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
