6. You Can Now Mix And Match Your PG And R-Rated Characters!
Need a boost for your new R-rated superhero movie? Worried that it lacks brand recognition? Bring in an existing character from a previous PG-13 film in the franchise! You can even have them played by a different actor! That's what Fox did with Deadpool, what with the appearance of Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) - familiar to fans of the X-movies with his extremely subtle shiny metal skin. Of course, the decision stems from screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, but the reasoning was much the same. It's also fun to get a character known for PG-13 affiliations being subjected to all the raucous low-brow humour to be found attached to an R-rating. Showing this kind of crossover, between characters that are arguably for different filmic audiences, as a tool for launching new properties means the way is paved for other studios to follow suit. In fact, DC are arguably doing a similar thing by having Batfleck appear in Suicide Squad, due out in August.
