8 Weird Directions The Comic Book Movie Genre Could Take

3. Old Superheroes

We€™ve seen plenty of origin stories already, so why not at least show us the end? There are a wealth of classic stories about superheroes in the twilight of their years so it is not unreasonable to think that this could become a trend with properties in the future. The Dark Knight Returns has been discussed as a potential adaptation for years and although it has been adapted into animation and mined repeatedly by other adaptations (seemingly most significantly with Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice) it could still be adapted and carve out its own distinct identity. Although a benchmark, The Dark Knight Returns also isn€™t the only possible future for the Bat and the idea of adapting Batman Beyond could similarly be resurrected. Batman does not have a monopoly on the aging superhero gig either: Old Man Logan would make for a tremendous film, bringing in elements of dystopian futurism familiar from Blade Runner, Mad Max and Escape From New York into the genre. Old Man Logan specifically would suffer if licensing issues barred the inclusion of essential characters such as the Hulk and Hawkeye but even if those characters were to be omitted there is still the basis for a great story. Kingdom Come would also have the potential to be a trilogy, one that could match any other in terms of epic grandeur. A Kingdom Come trilogy would involve a cast of a thousand heroes both old and new and would be a completely polarized approach to the reboot/origin cycle that is so steadfastly repeated.
