8 Wild Movie Fan Theories (That Were Actually Correct)
2. RoboCop Is An Allegory For Jesus - RoboCop
It’s a credit to Dutch auteur Paul Verhoeven that he took RoboCop, which on the surface sounds like the dumbest thing ever, and made an enduring sci-fi classic. There are a lot of layers to the story of a cop being transformed into a robot, including commentary on corporations, consumerism and questions of identity.
Admirers quickly picked up on the RoboCop as Jesus subtext, and it's not subtle if you look for it. You have Murphy being crucified by his killers, leading to his resurrection as RoboCop, who then becomes the saviour of Detroit; he even appears to walk on water during the final showdown with Boddicker.
Of course, this was all intentional, since Verhoeven has a fascination with the story of Jesus and even published a book on the topic.
He’s since confirmed the Jesus allegory and is impressed fans have read more into the Christian imagery than he intended, like Dick Jones being a Satan figure who falls to earth at the climax.
