80s Action Renaissance - 5 Actors Who Could Carry the Torch of Big and Dumb

5. Idris Elba

This may be a supreme stretch, but confidence in acting goes a long way. Elba has garnered critical acclaim for his role in the Wire, and has spread out into films of all varieties. But he is a stout black actor who I could see throwing a punch or two and firing a few automatic weapons in the direction of some baddies. Elba, the European star, has panache. He could pull off any action role in my opinion because he can change his accent to fit any region. He managed to pull of a southern ship captain in Prometheus, even if his character was lacking.

4. Gerard Butler

Seriously, what is this guy doing with his career? From 300 to P.S. I Love You and The Bounty Hunter, Butler's career has derailed into farce over the last few years. Perhaps he wanted to take things in this direction, but I can't imagine it is what he was put on this Earth to do. Butler is not the most sound thespian, a perfect candidate for big dumb and loud. He has the biceps to carry a sub-machine gun on one arm and throw a bowie knife with the other, he just needs to do it. Stick this guy in a Timecop reboot - yes, Timecop, a good Van Damme film - and see what he might be able to do.
