9 "Upcoming" Movie Remakes Trapped In Development Hell
2. The Never-Ending Story
Sometimes, film titles are just perfect for their production stories and that's definitely the case with The Never-Ending Story. The original - made by Wolfgang Petersen in 1984 - is a legitimate nostalgic classic that should be protected at all costs. Which inevitably means that Hollywood has been trying to remake it for ages.
Michael Ende - the novel's writer - won't be unimpressed with that fact either, since he was famously so annoyed at how many creative liberties were being taken on the adaptation that he tried to sue the production out of existence.
He might eventually get a far truer adaptation, if the deal that brought The Kennedy/Marshall Company, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way into play to remake the film with their manifesto specifically mentioning a closer take on the source text. Sadly, rights issues with Warner Bros seemingly killed that remake, with Kathleen Kennedy saying it seemingly just wasn't meant to be, but that hasn't stopped the project being considered still active in certain quarters.
