9 Actors Who Overstayed Their Welcome In Roles

8. Johnny Depp - Captain Jack Sparrow

Mystique Jennifer Lawrence

What began as a revelatory, Academy-award nominated performance that felt truly inspired has since devolved into absolute drivel. Depp has been playing the hammered Disney pirate for fifteen years now and the mileage shows.

When Depp first took on the role he was one of Hollywood's most elusive and interesting actors, taking on roles that continuously pushed him out of his comfort zone and into uncharted territory. Now, that could not be further from the truth. The actor has spent the last decade or so practically exclusively appearing in Tim Burton films and Pirates sequels, with each appearance growing more grating.

During production on the most recent film, Depp cared so little that there countless accounts of him flat-out not showing up to set. When he did show up, he wore an earpiece so that the crew could funnel his lines into his ear while he stood on his marker, because he apparently couldn't be bothered to even read the script. The result was a performance that is nothing more than an insulting caricature of the greatness Depp was once capable of in the role.

The sad irony of a performer who once questioned the validity of appearing in a sequel at all having learned to just show up and collect his check is not lost on audiences who resoundingly rejected this latest installment and its sequel bait.
