9 Awesome Movies That Were Shot In Secret
1. Manuscripts Don't Burn
Much like This Is Not A Film, Manuscripts Don't Burn needed to be smuggled out of Iran to the Cannes Film Festival, premiering under super-secret circumstances that reflect its thorny subject matter.
Director Mohammad Rasoulof has had countless run-ins with the Iranian government over the years - most recently having his passport confiscated and being banned from making films - and in 2013 he fought back by filming this thriller based on real events, where the government attempted to assassinate several "subversive" writers in 1995.
In addition to shooting the film covertly, Rasoulof went one step further by keeping his cast and crew uncredited, in order to protect them from any potential state repercussions given the film's incendiary material.
It was a stunningly audacious move, and though one could argue that the story of its creation overshadows the actual film itself, it's nothing if not a fiercely confronting piece of work in its own right.
