9 Beloved Films With Boring Scenes That Everybody Ignores
8. The Avengers - The Opening
Like Iron Man before it, The Avengers was far from a sure-fire hit. A team-up of this kind had never been attempted before and Joss Whedon's previous run-in's with cinema certainly didn't leave an enviable track record. So you'd imagine the film would try to hit the ground running. Instead it's a rather unoriginal opening. There's some generic narration, then the film dives right into undefined concepts, giving Samuel L. Jackson and Stellan SkarsgÄrd some mumbo jumbo to spout. This is broken up by the unexplained return of a previously dead villain (post-credit stings aside) and a typical car chase. Woo. The gamble was clearly that audiences had brought into the characters to the extent where twenty minutes of ambiguous set-up wouldn't faze them. Yes there's Nick Fury and Loki, who have become fan favourites, but it's all rather safe. The problem with the opening is that not only does it only really delay us assembling the Avengers, but it is noticeably weaker than the rest of the film; it's lacking both the humour and spatial creativity of later sequences.
