9 Biggest Movies Coming Out In July 2018

5. Skyscraper

Ant Man And The Wasp
Warner Bros

Central Intelligence proved to be a surprise hit last summer for Dwayne Johnson, so naturally he'd want to team up with director Rawson Marshall Thurber for another summer blockbuster. Rather than an action-comedy, Skyscraper seems to be setting itself more up as a straight-up action thriller.

This would be somewhat of a change of pace for Thurber who, with films like Dodgeball and We're The Millers under his belt, is certainly not experienced with hard action. Then again, the Russo brothers were equally inexperienced before Winter Soldier, and look how that turned out.

Details are loose on Skyscraper as filming has yet to even begin, but it looks to be pitching itself as something of mix between Die Hard and The Towering Inferno. Johnson plays a former FBI agent turned building security assessor, who is framed for setting a notouriously safe skyscraper ablaze whilst visiting China. On the run from the law, Johnson has to clear his name and save his family, who just so happen to be trapped in the burning skyscraper.

Skyscraper certainly sounds in line with Johnson's recent ridiculous blockbuster fare like San Andreas, so this could certainly go over well. However, this does seem to stand as another example of America pandering to the Chinese market with its superfluous setting. After the disasterous performance of Transformers: The Last Knight this summer in the country, maybe this is a trend that'll start to die out.
