9 Bizarre Early Drafts That Nearly Destroyed Your Favourite Films
6. Woody Attempted To Kill Buzz In Toy Story
You got a friend in me In the first draft of Toy Story, the head of Disney Studios at the time Jeffrey Katzenberg had a ton of utterly bizarre ideas for the animated film. Katzenberg wanted to take the film in a much darker direction, veering away from family-orientated entertainment. Of course, the central conflict in Toy Story is the relationship between Buzz and Woody, with Woody's jealously over Andy's shiny new toy fuelling much of the action and kick-starting the entire tale. But things would have been vastly different (by that I mean so much worse) if this conflict had manifested itself in Woody literally attempting to murder Buzz. As it stands, Buzz is accidentally knocked out of Andy's window, causing the toys to turn on Woody and blame him for what happens. But in the initial storyboards, Woody is a much different character. For a start, he's horrible to the other toys specifically, he mistreats Slinky, essentially forcing him to be his guard dog. This change in character leads to Woody actually throwing Buzz from Andy's window in an attempt to get rid of him, fuelled by desperate jealousy. When the other toys notice this, they overpower the violent Woody and throw him from the window, too. Sounds like a real family-friendly movie.
