9 Bond Women That 007 Didn't Actually Sleep With
2. Moneypenny - Every Bond Film
The age old 'will they, no they never will' flirtations between James Bond and M's Secretary started off as a funny in joke, with Lois Maxwell's Moneypenny giving as good as she got with the respective Bonds. Unfortunately the scriptwriters took the joke and eventually made it at the expense of one of the staple characters of the 007 franchise.
The portrayals of Moneypenny by Caroline Bliss during the Dalton era and Samantha Bond during the Brosnan era, were nothing more than poor caricatures of helpless women pining for the man they could never have. The final insult occurs at the conclusion of Die Another Day, where Moneypenny uses a virtual simulator to 'have her dreams fulfilled.' It is a cheap joke that wants the audience to laugh at a mainstay character rather than with her.
So far Naomie Harris' interpretation has been a step in the right direction, with the flirtations being delivered from an equal balance of power. Moneypenny's character has also been fleshed out, acting more as an agent on the ground rather than the helpless secretary of the past.
