9 Changes Warner Bros Wishes It Could Make To Its DC Universe
3. A More Traditional Lex Luthor
Batman v Superman had many problems, and high on the list was Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor. Not only was the Social Network star's performance completely over the top, it was cliched and his villainous plan was predictable, despite having more holes in it than Alex Murphy in the opening scene of RoboCop.
Part of the problem was the decision to reimagine the character as a weird mash-up of Mark Zuckerberg and Heath Ledger's Joker. Sometimes traditional is the way to go, and this was one of those times.
Luthor should have been cold, calculating and dignified, but Eisenberg, who looked like he had been dressed by Wes Anderson in some scenes, was none of those things. Although there had been two versions of the character on the big screen already, there were so many other aspects of this iconic villain that could have been explored, instead of going down the route of half-baked reinvention.
The evidence suggests Warner is well aware this version of Luthor didn't strike a chord with fans are critics, hence why his role was reportedly scaled back for Justice League. If they could take another stab at Batman v Superman, the studio would either cast a different actor or rewrite the role in a way that is closer to the comics.
