9 Classic Movies With Insane Unofficial Sequels
5. The Last Blood (AKA Hard Boiled 2)
John Woo’s action classic Hard Boiled only received a proper sequel in the form of Stranglehold, a videogame released in 2007. With the movie being something of a big hit on VHS back in the early nineties, however, the distributors of a Hong Kong movie called The Last Blood decided to give their action comedy a boost by redubbing it Hard Boiled 2; despite the film being made two years before Hard Boiled.
The plot follows an assassination attempt on the Dalai Lama, who is left seriously injured and needs a blood transfusion; the only problem is he has an extremely rare blood type, so a cop has to protect the only donor he can find, who just happens to be a sleazy criminal. It does feature well-shot action and an explosive showdown in a hospital, so squint and you can see how it could be related to Hard Boiled. Still, even if you can get past the name, the film is a little too heavy on cringe-worthy comedy.
The Last Blood is enjoyable on its terms, but an action masterpiece it most definitely is not.
