9 Comic Book Movie Moments That Need To Be Retconned

6. Ben Kingsley & Guy Pearce's Fake Mandarins (Iron Man 3)

The Moment: This one's a one-two punch, beginning with the reveal that Ben Kingsley's character is not, in fact, the Mandarin, but rather an actor named Trevor Slattery who is employed to assume the role of a decoy. Then, at the end of the movie, Guy Pearce's Aldrich Killian declares himself to be the true Mandarin when facing off against Iron Man. Why It Needs To Be Retconned: Because it's a lame way to screw with comic book fans. Sure, Shane Black and Drew Pearce certainly pulled out a plot twist nobody saw coming, but they sacrificed a fantastic opportunity to give a much-loved comic book villain a fantastic showdown with Iron Man. Instead, it was pretty much wasted on two smug "gotcha!" moments. Will It Be?: In a way, it almost already has been. The Marvel short All Hail the King sees Slattery being broken out of prison to meet the real Mandarin, though it's also rather unlikely that the Marvel Cinematic Universe will actually deal with the character again. This just seems like a tongue-in-cheek way for Marvel to appease the fanboys upset by Iron Man 3's treatment of the Mandarin, to say "The real one's out there!", while never having to directly fix the problem. So kinda, but not really.
