9 Comic Book Movie Moments That Need To Be Retconned
3. Erik Selvig's Insanity (Thor: The Dark World)
The Moment: After being under Loki's control in The Avengers, Erik Selvig appears to have gone somewhat insane in Thor: The Dark World, running around naked at Stonehenge and eventually being institutionalised as a form of comic relief throughout the movie. Why It Needs To Be Retconned: The Thor movies seem to struggle quite desperately with nailing comic relief, and this was just another aside that was just too damn goofy. Selvig is an interesting character played by a fantastic actor, but relegating him to being a one-note joke rather than giving him some actual agency is just depressing and irritating. Will It Be?: Selvig will be appearing in Age of Ultron and presumably a number of upcoming MCU movies, so it really could go either way: he could be back to normal now, or the whole mad scientist shtick could just be his gimmick from now on, something of a running joke for the future. Hopefully he'll actually come back to reality for Age of Ultron.
2. Deadpool Doesn't Have A Mouth (X-Men Origins: Wolverine)
The Moment: Though Deadpool is initially introduced in wise-cracking form as played by Ryan Reynolds, he disappears from the movie and returns later as Wolverine's enemy, a genetic experiment who has his mouth sewn up, can shoot laser beams from his eyes and can extend claws from his hands. Why It Needs To Be Retconned: Because this is just the total opposite of what Deadpool is in the comics. His nickname is "The Merc with the Mouth" for Christ's sake. To take such an iconic comic book character, strip away his classic uniform, seal his mouth shut and turn him into a villain with different powers is to show zero respect for both the source material and the fans paying to see the movie. Will It Be?: A standalone Deadpool movie is already in production for release next year, and from what's been seen and talked about so far, the suit looks awesome, it's R-rated, and will be much more faithful to the comics. Plus, with X-Men: Days of Future Past pretty much erasing Origins: Wolverine from the timeline alongside the potential for Deadpool to appear in a future X-Men movie, it really looks like the best is yet to come.
